Weather on the Otago Central Rail Trail is generally dry, although nearer the coast in the Strath Taieri between Kokonga and Middlemarch showers are more likely. Persistent rain is rarely a problem.

Summer (late November - January - February - March) temperatures can climb into the 30's, but because of low humidity it is not a physically draining heat. Night time temperatures often drop to the low teens and sometimes
under 10 degrees making sleep easy on the Rail Trail.

The onset of Spring (Late September - October - early November) brings the most changeable weather to the Rail Trail. Warm and sunny can suddenly become cold and wet. Frosts are not uncommon.

Just as coastal areas have sea breezes the Central Otago region has katabatic winds, often referred to as mountain breezes. Sun heated air in the plains and valleys rises to be replaced by more dense cooler air tumbling from mountain ranges. These winds have a very pleasant cooling effect, but they can also be strong and come from all over the place.

Prevailing winds are an issue of debate on the Rail Trail, making the decision to start at the Middlemarch or Clyde pretty much one of personal preference.
