Poolburn

Scroll down for Accommodation and Food & Refreshments

Poolburn of today is very different to the township it once was. Gone are shops and other businesses, although the pub’s still as busy as ever and just down the road the primary school continues to serve farming families throughout the Ida Valley. Poolburn, just 7km from Omakau, is where after climbing up and over Raggedy Range you turn right to visit Poolburn Dam. The lake created by the dam and its surrounding landscape was transformed in Rohan for the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. As with many rural schools, the school is very much a centre for community activities. Over the years it has been used as a polling booth, a venue for wedding receptions and hosted political meetings. Free accommodation provider transport makes Poolburn and Moa Creek easily accessible to Rail Trailers.

1931 Poolburn Dam Rohan, Lord of the Rings fame
It’s hard to believe these cribs (baches) were camouflaged as farmhouses for The Lord Of The Rings movie trilogy Poolburn Dam, built in 1931 as an irrigation reservoir, is stocked with brown trout making it a favourite fishing spot, especially for those fishers who enjoy out of the way places
