In the rain shadow of the Southern Alps, Central Otago is the driest part of New Zealand. Most rural areas do not have treated water supplies. Water may be from springs, roof tanks or wells. Locals are used to the water they drink, but it may upset visitor stomachs. It is in your own health interest to purchase commercially bottled water. Please try not to waste water while staying in Central Otago --- all water supplies are precious. Far better to play safe and buy commercially bottled water.
