Factory Road, Waipiata

Looking as if it could easily have been transplanted to Waipiata from Auckland's Ponsonby or Devonport, it is hard to believe this delightful little bay villa was to be demolished. But that all changed when ghastly exterior wall cladding was pulled away to reveal original weatherboards. Further investigation showed the house to be basically sound. Demolition quickly became restoration. For Dunedin's Wayne and Sally McDonald it was a case of love at first sight, buying fully restored Waipiata Cottage in 2005 as their Central Otago holiday escape and when not in residence, offersing as fully self-contained residence, offer it as self-contained.

Only a few pedal turns off the trail, Waipiata Cottage is even better than it looks in these photographs with a natural indoor-outdoor flow. This two-bedroom home away from home really is Rail Trail accommodation at the upper end of the scale with the emphasis on quality furnishings and fixtures. Although the two Californian king size beds are splitable, Sally recommends Waipiata Cottage as two couple accommodation... 'Ideal for chilling out under the verandah whilst enjoying a glass of wine and views of the Maniototo, or over colder months, catching up on old times while relaxing in front of the fire.'
