The red brick Patearoa Hotel rose out of the ashes of the original built in 1886 and destroyed by fire in 1927. Something else the ‘new’ Patearoa Hotel has in common with many of the region’s hotels is a relatively narrow road frontage giving little away about the size of accommodation. Patearoa Hotel has 4 very comfortable, good size twin bedrooms and several guest toilets and bathrooms. One bedroom has an ensuite. The hallway and dining room are resplendent in their 1920’s varnished wood paneling demonstrating the care hosts Lee and Ron lavish on their hotel.
Beyond the back of the main hotel is an opportunity to stay in buildings of a more recent past. In the late 1970’s and early 80’s the government sponsored a major farm irrigation project for the Maniototo Plains involving hundreds of workers. Seven of the scheme’s workers’ chalets and an ablution block now form a very pleasant accommodation enclave set among rock gardens. Each chalet has twin bed accommodation. |
