Full range of beverages including expresso coffee, beers, Central Otago wines.
Seasonal menu largely based on a Mediterranean theme. Meals, light snacks, home baking (including Kissing Gate’s signature Kumara Cake).
It’s a question everyone asks. What is a kissing gate? Well, it’s a small gate set in a ‘u’ or ‘v’ shape enclosure to keep stock off railway lines but allow pedestrians through one at a time. The action of the gate just touches or ‘kisses’ each of the two gateposts.
The wonderful thing about the Kissing Gate Café is that food prepared by Kate Wilson and her team of locals more than lives up to the promise of the street appeal of the restored wooden pioneer era cottage. Being locals, staff are more than happy to share their knowledge of Middlemarch history and attractions. Fresh ingredients, many sourced locally, are the order of the day. Atmosphere is further enhanced by original art and photography available for purchase.
When leaving the Rail Trail turn right and follow the road to the main highway --- 50kph through Middlemarch. The Kissing Gate is about half a km down the highway in the direction of Dunedin. |
