Four generations ago, the Kinney family came out from Ireland to farm in the Hyde area. 130 years later, Kinney's still farm here. They also extend famous southern country-style hospitality to Rail Trailers.
When a four-acre property next door to their farm came up for sale, Joc and David Kinney saw the recently renovated three-bedroom home as ideal self-contained accommodation for people experiencing the Otago Central Rail Trail. “Here’s a place where people can stop for the evening, enjoy the last of the afternoon sun with a glass of good wine, have a hot bath and a great meal,” says Joc.
Emerald Hills is set among established grounds, but best of all, it’s right on the Rail Trail near Hyde township. Accommodation includes good quality linen, and great bedding.
There’s a new bathroom, large lounge with log-burner and the modern kitchen has everything for guests to self cater. Joc’s oven fresh baking is a special treat for guests on arrival. Breakfasts are robust, often with produce from Joc and David’s 100 plus year old orchard. Evening meals by arrangement. An Emerald Hills bonus is David’s tours of the tussock clad hills of his large farm; a wonderful opportunity for a real taste of country life.
