Depending on which direction you are travelling the Otago Central Rail Trail, Chatto Creek Tavern is your first or last genuine Central Otago country pub. Built on the Alexandra to Naseby Cobb & Co coach route in 1886, its stacked stone construction has stood the test of time. When a mini-tornado whisked off the roof in 1991, the walls were unmoved and today tell their story through photographs and other memorabilia.
Just off the main bar, a sunroom dining area is ideal for thirsty Rail Trailers hanging out for a flat white or latte. Lesley’s meals, from $8 to $20, garner accolades the length of the Rail Trail. The beer garden, which borders onto the Rail Trail, is a well cared-for grassy oasis.
Accommodation includes 2 very comfortable double rooms ($60 a night) and a bunkroom with dormitory style accommodation for 6. Linen and towels supplied. Hearty cooked and continental breakfasts available. An informal camping area is also available. |
