During winter 2007 ten ensuites were installed, ten double rooms totally refurbished. New floor coverings, new paint, new beds, new everything! Not since it was built in the 1930’s has art deco inspired Blacks Hotel undergone such major renovation.
Without taking anything away from the authenticity and character of the main bar, publican Steve Chapman and wife Annie have also earned thumbs up from regulars for making the premises much lighter and more conducive for socialising. Rail Trail guests can look forward to a warm welcome, tall tales from locals and hearty pub-style meals.
Although Ophir is only 2km along a flat tarmac road from the Rail Trail at Omakau, accommodation and bar guests are welcome to call on the Blacks free courtesy van. The van is also available to take to the Rail Trail at Auripo guests who only want to ride or walk down the Poolburn Gorge
Another 2007 addition to Blacks destined to prove enormously popular is a decked courtyard affording shelter from the Central Otago sun and afternoon mountain breezes.
Accommodation is in two areas, ‘The Annex’ with four twin ensuite rooms and one ensuite queen room, and ‘The Hotel’ which provides one twin ensuite room and four ensuite queen rooms, two of which have fully tiled-wet area disabled facilities. Regardless of what you have read about Ophir’s temperature extreme Steve and Annie promise that at Blacks Hotel you’ll be cozy ‘n warm or comfortably cool. |
